Justin Ray // Creative Technologist & Music Producer

Hi, I'm Justin. I write songs, then I build the tools to finish them.

I'm a music producer, audio engineer, and creative technologist based in East Lansing, Michigan. Under the name loserdub I write and record songs by hand, no algorithms involved. Under JRAY I run the hybrid side of the work: generative audio treated as raw material, then cut, resampled, and rebuilt with the same care as any other instrument. In between the two, I build the tools that didn't exist yet and try to keep the human decisions visible in a field that's moving fast enough to lose them.

Community & Standards

I founded r/hybridproduction

When generative audio models started showing up in serious sessions, the conversation split into two camps: reject the technology outright, or treat unedited model output as a finished track. Neither felt honest to how music actually gets made. In 2023 I started r/hybridproduction to build a third space, one for producers who treat AI-generated stems the way you'd treat a sample or a field recording: material to be shaped, not a shortcut to a finished song.

That thinking eventually turned into a working classification framework (HPS) for describing how much of a track is AI-sourced versus human-performed. It's still a working document more than a finished standard, but it's public if you want to see where it's headed.

Attestation Engine LIVE ON WEB

An attestation engine built on the Hybrid Production Standard (HPS-1.0) framework, running as a dedicated web app.

Provides verifiable provenance, C2PA compatibility, and transparent track composition manifests.

Industry Experience

Where the engineering comes from

I've spent enough time inside these systems, as an early tester and as an outside consultant, to know where they're genuinely useful and where they quietly fall apart. That includes beta access to Google's MusicLM and to Suno, a Google GEAR Badge, and consulting work with Soundraw and Staccato AI on how generative audio tools actually hold up in a working producer's hands.

Proprietary Software

Software, because the workflow didn't exist yet

Every tool in the suite started as a gap in my own sessions. VOID slices, remixes, and pads out songs directly in the browser. MIXR Studio handles segment-based mixing and harmonic visualization, also browser-native. And the Push 2 work takes Ableton's hardware controller off Ableton entirely, running a custom interface straight over USB. None of it started as a product. It started as "this should exist, so I'll build it."

VOID DSP

Browser-native granular slicer, remixer, and pad synthesizer designed for generative stem re-synthesis.

MIXR Studio Mixing

Segment-based harmonic visualizer and mix balance workbench built on Web Audio API and modern canvas rendering.

Push 2 Web Bridge Hardware

Custom USB WebHID driver translating hardware controller physical encoders and displays into standalone browser DAWs.

Creative Identity

loserdub is the human half

Everything released under loserdub is made the old way: live piano, guitar, and vocals, written and performed rather than generated. No stems, no spectral rebuilding, just songs, kept honest enough that the imperfections stay in. It's the control group for everything else I build. VISION is where the hybrid method runs at full scale, generative textures and live performance sitting in the same session with neither one given priority.

Acoustic Pure
Human Records & Songwriting

Live piano, acoustic instruments, unquantized vocals, no generated material. What a song sounds like in its purest form before any algorithmic tool touches it.

VISION
Spectral Hybrid
Full-Scale Hybrid Production

Machine-generated source material and live performance co-existing in the same session at maximum depth, spectral splitting, and complex resampling.

JRAY
The Technologist
Producer & Systems Architect

The through-line uniting both worlds. Producer, developer, and author behind the r/hybridproduction community, open research, and DSP audio tools.

Philosophy & Ethics

Shaping where this goes, honestly

AI in music is moving faster than any agreed-upon norms around disclosure, provenance, or artist consent. I'd rather help build those norms from inside the workflow than wait for a platform or a regulator to hand them down. That's the throughline connecting the community, the tools, and the writing: keep the human decisions visible, keep the source material honest, and treat disclosure as a feature of the work rather than a liability to hide.

Collaboration & Services

Production, consultation, or talking shop

SEO and GEO work for artist and label sites, hybrid production consultation, or a second set of ears on an AI-assisted mix. I read everything personally.
